Monarch’s in Mexico
MEXICO'S monarch expedition
On this epic Motorcycle Adventure we will enjoy 6 days of great riding and one day to enjoy the vast amount of Monarch Butterflies that call Mexico their home for the winter. The little guys travel upwards of 3000 miles to central Mexico from November to March before making their trip back north.
We will only spend 9 days in Mexico, but in that short time we will enjoy some truly epic areas and some of the best locations that this area has to offer. Currently there are about 130 small towns that are called ‘Pueblos Magicos de Mexico’, and we will spend 5 nights in 4 of them, but also experience the massive Mexico City along with another stunning city called Morelia! I highly recommend flying down to Mexico City about 2 days earlier and joining me in being a tourist! The goal is to hit up some world famous museums, the pyramid of Teotihuacan, along with all the great culinary spots in the city.

day 1
Today we have a bright and early day as we head out of the Hotel to pick up our motorcycles and get ready for our first riding day in Mexico! We will have to ride through the big city and head east and towards the volcano Popocatepetl and our first scenic byway. This road is beautiful and full of forest trees, but the weather will play a big role in whether we take this route or a southern more direct route. Hopefully we can take byway that cuts between both Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl, before we head south towards our first Pueblo Magico, Atlixco. I’m excited for this little town as our hotel will have a magical backdrop of the largest volcano, Popocatepetl.
Mexico City to Atlixco 140 Miles - 6000’ elevation
day 2
After a relaxed first night in our relaxed lodge, we will hit the road and head west towards the southern side of Popocatepetl. Our first part of the ride will be similar to yesterdays, a lot of forrest riding before hitting some open fields. We will have a decent fun ride through a lot of very curvy roads before ending up on our second Pueblo Magico. Taxco is a very traditional spanish town that is built on a big hill with the church centered right in the middle of town. Our hotel will offer some amazing town views from our balcony!
Atlixco to Taxco 130 Miles - 5800’ elevation
day 3
Another beautiful day ahead, we will climb north through some mountain riding before taking a short ride up towards a great view point of the ‘Nevado de Toluca’ a beautiful stratovolcano that sits at 15,354 feet. While we won’t ride all the way up, we will hit a short dirt section to a nice viewpoint before heading back down. This part of the ride will be voluntary and pending weather. After a nice lunch we will keep heading west towards a very nice lake that is considered the ‘hamptons’ of Mexico! Obviously we need to stay on a lake front hotel, and trust me, it won’t disappoint.
Taxco to Valle de Bravo 145 Miles - 6000’ elevation
day 4
The day we have been waiting for! Today we head towards the Monarch Sanctuary Biosphere, and the highlight of this trip. Though let me tell you each and every day will be a big highlight as well, but the goal is to come and experience these millions of butterflies floating in the sky and resting on the trees. Our ride is short, but mostly through park like settings, but we will climb about 2400 feet to reach our 4th and final Pueblo Magico. Bring some warm layers as we will need them early and late in the day.
Valle de Bravo to Angangueo 70 Miles - 8400’ elevation
day 5
Today we will experience a beautiful morning, before the weather warms up and the butterflies hit the sky to warm their wings up. At this area there is a few offering for enjoying these creatures. You will have the choice of going on a hike nearby, or even take a horse ride deep into where the Monarchs hide at. Either way, it will be one magical place, and while i think it would be awesome to ride through a cloud of Monarchs, they are protected so we need to respect them as well.
Day off
day 6
After a magical day, it’s time to head to our next destination, Morelia! Not quite a Pueblo Magico, but one amazing city. The highlight of today is the roads we will ride, 3 different roads that are considered some of the best motorcycle riding in central Mexico. I really planned a stop at Morelia soley for these section of roads we will ride, as we are all riders, we enjoy great scenery and food, but the road is what calls us!
Angangueo to Morelia 135 Miles - 6300’ elevation
day 7
Its time to head back, while i hope it has been one amazing tour, we all gotta get back to the real world. Today will be a pretty fast highway ride back to Mexico City to drop off the motorcycles and head to our hotel. You may be able to catch a late flight today, or stay and leave sunday. Our last night is always a great one as we can all chat and share our photos and memories. And hope to see each other on another amazing Mexico or Baja Motorcycle Adventure!
