Meeting Day
Friday will be out meet up day, which will be in downtown San Diego. You can park your truck there or just ride your bike. Please show up all filled up and ready to ride the next day. Check in is after 3pm and dinner will be pizza at the conference room where we will get to know each other and talk about the upcoming weeks ride.
day 1
Our official first day of riding will be Saturday. We will have a very early day to get our gear dropped onto the truck and ourselves ready for departure. You will need to drop off your gear by 6am so that the truck can get a headstart to tonight’s destination. We will not see the truck until later that day, or perhaps at the hotel. We will head towards the mountains, and the small quiet town of Tecate. The goal is to get there by 7am so that we can get our FMM and have some great breakfast tacos. We will then continue on highway 2 towards our first dirt section, El Compadre trail through the northern mountain range of Baja. This section is a lot like the high sierras or colorado. We will continue on south on the pavement until we hit Valle de Trinidad, we will stop for a rest and perhaps some fuel before continuing on towards highway one via La Calentura. This section is a lot like what we have been on before turning onto a mostly grated canyon road. We will hit Highway 1 and then blast on down towards our first nights hotel. If we get in early we will ride the beach or save it for the morning.
Day 2
After an amazing first day, we will take it easy this morning as we head south towards El Rosario and the famous 1st Checkpoint of the original Baja 1000 Race. We will fill up here before embarking on a nice dirt road to the pacific coast. There’s nothing out there, so bring snacks and plenty of water. We are really only 3 hours from hotel to hotel, but our little track to the pacific will extend our day. If you want to relax you can just chill at the beach and then make your way to Catavina.
day 3
Today is one of our longer off road sections, its about 120 miles and there is no way out. The terrain is mostly hard packed, a few climbs/descends over a few hills, some fun two track wet sand, and even some silt! We will earn our lunch on today before deciding if we add more dirt, or head to one of the towns in Baja. This will be a group decision, but either way, its going to be a great day!
day 4 + 5
After a magical sunrise over the sea of cortez, we must say goodbye to my favorite town in Baja, Bahia de Los Angeles. We will have breakfast fairly early today as we have a single stretch of about 160 miles of dirt before we hit the highway and follow that to San Ignacio. If we make some good time, we will have some time to jump into the sea of cortez and relax a bit. So bring your swim trunks on this day. This section is one of the most epic ones in Baja, and perhaps my most favorite as well. A lot of hard pack dirt, with some sandy sections that can be ridden fast, or at your own pace. I will slow down and wait for those who are struggling and we will all get through it safely. The truck will wait for us at the next hotel. This day can be fully skipped and take the highway with the truck if you needed some rest, remember we aren’t all heros and its ok to take a break.
Officially adding a rest day.
Our rest day will be in San Ignacio, you can relax at the hotel or come with us to hang out at the beaches of Mulege. Trust me, it’s worth it!
day 6
After another amazing day of dirt riding, we have yet another! Today we will ride the dry beds of San Ignacio as we head south towards highway one, this section is about 100 miles, but to get here via payment its almost 300 since the highway cuts east. We will contiue on south before climbing up the canyon to one of Baja’s most beautiful Missions, Mision San Javier. This canyon has many water crossings, and if it has rained it could be unpassable. But we will try! Our nights destination is the beautiful town of Loreto.
day 7
Today we will embark through Baja’s Grand Canyon, this area is very beautiful but dry with lots of great riding. But to get there we will first book it through pavement to our fuel stop and then cut east towards the sea of cortez. This area is desolate, so we will need to be ready to handle it with plenty of water and make sure we are on our A game. Its a route many adventure tours skip, but it’s really worth the challenge to get to the beautiful waters and then follow the coast to La Paz.
day 8
Our last day, today will be shorter but still quite fun. We will ride most of the east cape road from Los Barilles to Cabo. This coastal road is hard packed sand with occasional sections of deeper sand through the washes. But this road sees a lot of traffic so the roads are always passable. A few short stops along the way before hitting Cabo and taking the hectic roads towards our hotel right on the beach. If we can lock this tour down ahead of schedule, we will be able to get one of the best hotels available right there overlooking the ‘Lands End’ point.
At this point we will pack up the bikes, load up anyone who is having me haul their bike back as well. I will depart early morning, you are then free to stay a few days and relax, go fishing or just exploring. Fly your loved ones in and have a great weekend with them!
Thank you for joining me on this epic adventure!
