Chasing summer

a summer ride through northern baja

On this ride we will meet Sunday June 23rd at the Tecate Border where we will head to our nice hotel in Tecate for the night. With the tour ending on the Saturday Morning of June 29th. Its 7 days of riding, 5 days of the best mixture of 50/50 roads suited for any large adventure or dual sport motorcycle. Sunday and Saturday will be a short ride from border. The terrain will be a mixture of hardpacked dirt, gravel, and coastal roads. Only a couple of short but challenging sections that we will get through, perfect for the Intermediate or above rider. We will make stops at places like; Horsepower Ranch, Coyote Cals, Santa Maria Beach, and Mikes Sky Rancho.

While this trip is called ‘Chasing Summer’, we won’t see the high temperature Baja is known for. Tecate weather is around max highs of 90s, Ensenada is mid 80s, so most of our riding will be done in the mid 80s with some peaks of 90s towards the end of the day. So don’t expect to be riding in 100s at all. Plus being right on the ocean a couple nights, and some cold pools at some hotels, it will be quite the relaxing ride.

Cost is $2000 and includes 6 nights shared room in Baja, All Breakfast and Dinners, Dinner Margarita, and Guide. You just cover your Fuel, Insurance, riding waters and snacks.

4/9 Update - 2 F700GS area available for rent, cost is $1100 plus $1000 deductible. Possible bran new F900GS, be one of the first riders to put it to the test! Cost is $1500

Day One

After a great night in Tecate, we will head out early towards La Rumorosa where we will take the dirt road towards Laguna Hanson. This section of dirt is about 80 miles and is hard packed dirt, with some soft spots and a little sandy two tracks towards the park. Very well traveled so it’s one of Baja’s Best roads! We will hit 5000ft elevation and take a break under the large Pine Trees. This section resembles a lot of higher sierra riding like you can find in Colorado. Our stay is at the great Horsepower Ranch, they have a pool so we will grab some margaritas and enjoy the cold water under the sun.

Day 2

After a great day at Horsepower Ranch, its time to head out bright and early to beat the heat on our first dirt section. Its called ‘La Calentura’ or the Fever for a reason. This volcanic canyon gets extremely hot at peak hours, so our goal is to get through it by midday and head towards the coast for our second dirt section and the pacific breeze. Tonight we stay at Coyote Cals, a hostel like location that provides very basic lodging but some good food and cold beers! Another favorite place to stay for many off roaders and travelers alike.

Day 3

Today we will ride most of the pacific coast down to the Volcanoes of San Quintin. Here we will practice more sand riding, dont worry too much as its very short and mostly all packed down. We will grab lunch at Oyster farm right on the coast before heading towards our beach front hotel. If we get in early enough and the Tide is going out, we will ride the beach! This place is magical since you can ride your motorcycle for quite a long time up and down the beach.

Day 4

After some fun on the beach its time to head back north and ride back up La Calentura and towards Mikes Sky Ranch. If you ever hear anyone talking about Baja, you know Mikes Sky Ranch is the place to visit. This is a very basic hotel with some decent food, but the road getting in and out is just amazing to ride! Its about the most challenging section we will ride on this tour, but after 3 days of great riding, you will be a much better rider and this will be a great place to test your improved skills.

Day 5

The way out is not always the same in Baja, and today we will take the much less beat up road and hit some fast flowing sections towards Valley T. We will grab some fuel and snack then keep on heading north towards Ojos Negros and the famous ‘El Compadre’ Trail. This 60 mile section is a lot like the first day, but a couple short sections of deeper two track sand. The sections are about 100 meters or less so nothing to panic. It won’t be miles of Sand today! We will stay the night at the end of the track at the old Bullfighting Hotel of Santa Veronica. This place is a spa so i will set up some time to hit the Sauna and even Massages if you want one. I highly recommend them after a week long ride through Baja.

day 6

Saturday morning we will ride a short 25 miles to the border, say our goodbyes, and hit the road home. Truly hope we all enjoyed Baja on this tour.
